They headlined the World Athletics Awards 2025 on Sunday, where six other athletes were also honoured across three categories, track, field, and out-of-stadium events, before the two overall winners were announced.

Before claiming the top prize, Mondo Duplantis was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Year, while Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone earned the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year award.

"Thank you so much. This is such a huge honour. Thank you to the jury and World Athletics for voting me in yet again," said Mondo Duplantis as quoted by World Athletics.

On her part, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone said: "Wow, I’m honestly blown away to win this. Thank you so much, World Athletics, for this honour and recognition. The culmination of the season in Tokyo was a really special moment."

Other category winners included Spain’s Maria Perez and Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe for out-of-stadium events, Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi for men’s track, and Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers for women’s field.

The evening also celebrated the sport’s future, with the Rising Star awards going to world medalists Edmund Serem of Kenya and Zhang Jiale of China.

The pinnacle of the awards gala is undoubtedly the Male and Female World Athlete of the Year categories, Mondo Duplantis and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Mondo Duplantis are recognised for their dominant performances, record-breaking achievements, and consistent excellence throughout the season, are each honoured with a substantial US$100,000 prize.

This six-figure sum is the most prominent cash award directly dispensed at the gala, signifying the immense value placed on being crowned the world's best.

Awards such as the Male and Female Rising Star Awards, which celebrate the sport's most promising young talents, are presented with significant fanfare.

Similarly, the Coaching Achievement Award, the Woman of the Year Award, the President's Award, and the Member Federation Award acknowledge outstanding contributions across various facets of the sport.

However, it is important to note that while these categories confer immense honour and boost the profiles of their recipients, World Athletics generally does not attach a specific, recurring cash prize to them in the same way they do for the Athletes of the Year.
