A growing chorus of political leaders is urging President William Ruto to rename the new Talanta Stadium after the late former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, to commemorate his significant contributions to Kenyan sports.
The latest appeal came from Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who made an impassioned plea during Odinga's funeral service in Bondo on Sunday.
Addressing the president directly, Wanga proposed the 60,000-seat venue be named in his honour.
"Our president, we only ask one more thing from you… that magnificent 60,000-seater stadium… we ask that it be renamed Raila Odinga Talanta Stadium," Wanga stated.
A Fitting Tribute to a Sports Enthusiast
In a nod to their shared passion for English football, Wanga also suggested a special inaugural match. She urged President Ruto to arrange a friendly between Arsenal FC, a club both he and Odinga supported, and the Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars.
"Since you are also an Arsenal fan, just like Baba was… once the stadium is complete next year, we ask you to invite Arsenal to come play a friendly against Harambee Stars as part of the Raila Odinga Memorial Cup," she added.
"Manchester United fans will have to find something else to do on that day."
Kenya’s Largest Stadium Nears Completion
These sentiments echo earlier calls made by several legislators during a special session of the National Assembly on Thursday, following Odinga's passing from a heart attack on Wednesday.
The Talanta Stadium is a major infrastructure project slated for completion by the end of the year. It is a key venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania. Upon completion, it will become the nation's largest stadium, surpassing the 48,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium.
Beyond his celebrated political career, Odinga was a well-known and passionate sports enthusiast. He was a frequent attendee at sporting events both locally and internationally, with his last major appearance being at the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in August.
