Ji Sung Park made a tremendous career at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson with his tenacious displays, but his route to getting there was through an unorthodox diet.

Park Ji-Sung's dynamic performances for Manchester United became legendary during his seven-year career with the English Premier League club.

It is a much more unlikely concoction that laid the foundations for the midfielder's rise to prominence.

After showing promise as a schoolboy footballer, Park's progress was in danger of stalling because he lacked the physique required to cope with the demands on a top player's body.

In a bid to fast-track Park's growth, his father would make the long journey from their home in Suwon to Go-heung county, where he would visit frog farms to gather the ingredients for an unusual protein drink.

The protein drink was effectively made out of wild frogs, which would be boiled, before he drank it to enhance his strength.

Recalling the experience back in 2011, Park stated, "My father went to catch wild frogs. I was skinny and weak, and my father heard their juice would give me size and strength.

“It tasted very, very bad, but I had to drink it because I wanted to be a footballer, and everyone said I needed to be bigger and stronger.

“They said it was good for my health to become stronger, and I ate everything that would improve my health."

Despite the dubious nature of this home remedy, it appeared to have worked wonders, as Park gained fame for his exceptional fitness and tenacity on the field.

This unorthodox approach to training did not deter him from achieving remarkable success.

He went on to make history as the first Asian winner of the Champions League and clinched three Premier League titles under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Retiring in 2014 at the age of 37, Park Ji-sung has since taken on the role of a United ambassador.

Park is one of the most successful Asian players in football history, having won 19 trophies in his career.

He is the first Asian footballer to have won the UEFA Champions League, to play in a UEFA Champions League final, as well as the first Asian to have won the FIFA Club World Cup.

He was a member of the team that finished fourth at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and also represented his nation at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

At the World Cup, he was named man of the match four times, the most of any Asian player.
