Before his debilitating injury, Chidera Ejuke was talismanic for Sevilla. He has had to slowly work himself back into form, and in his first start since returning to action, he reminded fans of the Spanish top flight why he was one of the most exciting players in the division before his injury.

He not only scored the winning goal, a 46th-minute curler from the edge of the box, he was a constant livewire for Sevilla, breaking ankles and creating chances in his 70 odd minutes on the pitch.

The Nigerian completed 21 out of 22 attempted passes in the match, achieving a 100% long ball completion rate, and he won seven of the ten ground duels he contested.

Ejuke justified Garcia Pimenta's decision to give him his first start since returning from injury with his performance against Real Sociedad. In the broader context, he also showed that Eric Chelle's decision to include him in the Super Eagles provisional squad was correct, even though he had yet to regain his pre-injury form.

With the victory, Los Nervionenses leapfrogged La Real on the log, moving into 10th. Crucially, they are now only five points away from the guaranteed European football slots and their eternal rivals Real Betis.
